How it's funded
Free, funded transparently — no catch buried in the fine print
Most tools like this cost money or bury ads and trackers in your face. Spark Tray does neither. It’s free because you quietly share a little idle bandwidth in the background — and we’d rather explain exactly how that works than hope you never ask.
No account. No subscription. No ads, no tracking pixels, no selling your data. Just a fair, boring exchange: you get four local tools for free, and in return a partner service borrows a small slice of your unused internet connection when it won’t get in your way.
Why it's free
An exchange, not a subscription
The usual way
You pay a monthly fee, or you pay with your attention — ads, upsells, and trackers that follow you around. The bill never really stops.
The Spark Tray way
You share a small amount of idle bandwidth you’re already paying for and rarely notice. That covers the cost of building and maintaining the app, so the price to you stays at zero.
The bandwidth sharing is powered by the Massive SDK, a partner that runs a legitimate bandwidth marketplace — businesses pay for access to residential connections for things like price comparison, ad verification, and web data collection. Your share of that is what keeps Spark Tray free.
In plain terms
What “sharing idle bandwidth” actually means
No jargon. Here's what does and doesn't happen on your machine.
What it is
- A small part of your unused internet connection is routed through your device — the way a lot of “free” apps quietly keep the lights on.
- It uses spare capacity: the bandwidth sitting idle while you’re not streaming, gaming, or on a call.
- Traffic is other companies’ ordinary web requests passing through — not something you host, store, or are responsible for.
What it isn’t
- Not access to your files, your screen, your accounts, or anything you type. Spark Tray’s tools run locally and stay local.
- Not a background miner or something that hammers your CPU — this is about bandwidth, not grinding your machine.
- Not running when it would cost you money or slow you down (see the defaults below).
Good-citizen defaults
Built to stay out of your way
These behaviours are on by default and disclosed to you during install — not opt-in traps you have to go hunting for.
Pauses on metered connections
On a connection Windows flags as metered — a phone hotspot, a capped plan — sharing stops, so it never spends data you're paying for by the gigabyte.
Backs off when you're active
When you're actively using your connection, it eases off and yields to you first. You come before the background job, always.
Optional usage cap
You can set a limit on how much bandwidth is shared, so it never exceeds an amount you're comfortable with.
Disclosed at install
The exchange is spelled out plainly when you set Spark Tray up — no dark patterns, no pre-ticked boxes, no surprises after the fact.
Your control
Leaving is simple: uninstall
To keep the app free for everyone, bandwidth sharing is part of using Spark Tray — it isn’t a paid feature you can toggle off while keeping the tools. If you’d rather not take part, the opt-out is straightforward and complete: uninstall the app. When it’s gone, the sharing stops entirely.
No retention screens, no “are you sure?” guilt trips, no hoops. We’d rather you leave easily and think well of us than trap you into staying.
Privacy
What leaves your device — and what never does
The four Spark Tray tools — downloading, bulk-queuing, background removal, and transcription — run entirely on your machine. The files you work with, the URLs you paste, and the media you process stay on your device. They aren’t uploaded to us or to anyone else.
The bandwidth sharing carries the partner’s web traffic — not your personal data, browsing history, or anything you do in the app. We don’t sell your data, and we don’t build a profile of you.
For the full detail on what’s collected and why, read the Privacy Policy.
