How to Download Vimeo Videos (Free & Private, on Windows)

3 min read
A single clean video frame lifting out of a minimalist player and settling as a saved file on a dark desktop, lit in soft indigo and violet.

If you need to know how to download Vimeo videos — to keep an offline copy of your own upload, archive a client project you're permitted to save, or watch a licensed video without a connection — this guide shows the private desktop way on Windows. Everything happens on your own PC: no ads, no upload to a random server, and no watermark stamped on the result.

Start with Vimeo's own download button

Before reaching for anything else, check Vimeo first. For your own videos, and for videos where the creator has enabled downloading, Vimeo provides a native Download button — on the video page or under your video's settings. That's the cleanest, most above-board route, and it's the one to use whenever it's available.

You'd only look further when the button is missing, when you want a specific resolution Vimeo doesn't offer in that menu, or when you're saving several videos and want them queued rather than clicked one by one.

Why not use a Vimeo download website?

The "vimeo downloader" websites that fill the search results are ad-funded, and the ads are the point. Expect pop-ups, redirect loops, fake buttons, and files that occasionally aren't what they claim to be — several of these domains get flagged by browsers and antivirus tools. They also cap quality and send every link you paste to someone else's server.

A desktop app avoids all of it. Spark Tray's Video Downloader fetches the stream on your machine — no ads, no upload, no watermark. It's a signed Windows app, free, and it works offline once installed.

How to download a Vimeo video, step by step

  1. Copy the Vimeo link. Open the video and copy its URL from the address bar or the Share panel.
  2. Paste it into Spark Tray. Drop the link into the Video Downloader; it reads the available streams automatically.
  3. Pick your resolution. Choose 720p, 1080p, or up to 4K — whatever the creator uploaded. Switch to an audio-only format if you only want the sound.
  4. Download it. Spark Tray saves the file straight to your Downloads folder, locally, with no sign-up and no watermark.

A quick note on access: a downloader can only save a video you're actually able to view. Private or password-protected Vimeo videos still need the creator's permission — no tool bypasses that, and you shouldn't want one that does.

Keep it to videos you're allowed to save

The honest framing matters here. Stick to content you have a right to keep: your own uploads, videos a creator has explicitly allowed you to download, work you've been licensed or hired to archive, or personal offline copies of freely available material. Downloading someone else's paid or private content without permission isn't what this guide is for. Because Spark Tray runs entirely on-device, your links and files never leave your PC.

Downloading a batch of Vimeo videos

If you're archiving a whole channel of your own uploads or a set of licensed project files, doing it one link at a time is tedious. Paste your list of Vimeo URLs into Spark Tray's Bulk Downloader and let it work through them in the background. It's the same on-device, no-watermark process — just run across many videos at once.

The bottom line

To download Vimeo videos privately: use Vimeo's own download button where it exists, and for everything else, a signed desktop app that runs on your own machine beats the ad-choked websites. You get full-quality files, optional audio-only exports, batch support, no watermark, and total privacy — for free. The approach is the same across platforms, so the same tool covers downloading YouTube videos and downloading video from almost any website. Start with the Video Downloader.
